Be the fix the community needs

Mariam Mohammed has a zest for life that's infectious, as well as a desire for leading on change that leaves those around her wanting to also get stuck in.

Having survived an abusive relationship at a young age while living in Pakistan, the country she grew up in, Mariam arrived in Australia with just $300 in her pocket. Now, she is driven by her desire to help women achieve independence, so they can live their best lives.

"My why is that I want my four nieces to have a better life than I did,” Mariam tells Shirley Chowdhary in this week’s episode of The Leadership Lessons.

“I don’t want them to be sexually assaulted. I don’t want them to date abusive partners and stay in abusive relationships. I don’t want them to accept abuse at the hands of their fathers and brothers, because they’ve been taught blood is thicker than water or whatever the fuck women are taught these days.

“I was constantly straddling that line between security and going back to a life of violence because I had never learned how the money system works."

This is a positive and powerful episode that will leave you knowing that the future really is in excellent hands.
