Episode 47: Star Trek : Picard

Welcome To the Party Pal meticulously explores the in-and-outs of a compelling new addition to the Star Trek franchise — Star Trek: Picard. Picard is a web/television series featuring the character Jean-Luc Picard (in a role reprised by the brilliant Sir Patrick Stewart), created for CBS All Access and developed by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer, and Alex Kurtzman. It is the eighth series in the Star Trek television franchise and Picard picks up twenty years after the feature film Star Trek: Nemesis (2002). The series finds a seemingly-retired Picard in the final chapter of his life, living on a French chateau and winery yet deeply troubled by his past, especially the death of his dear friend, the android Data, the destruction of the planet Romulus, and the devastation of Mars by an android uprising.

To properly break down this dark and intriguing first season of Picard, WTTPP turns to Jonathan Hart (from WTTPP’s famed Bill Paxton Episode and The End of The F***ing World Episode) for help. Jonathan Hart is the host of the music-centric Brokedown Podcast and a co-host of the Helping Friendly Podcast, both a part of the Osiris Media Group. To further explore the themes and imagery present in the first season of Picard, WTTPP spoke with writer, artist, and Head Editor at the Art & Culture magazine Across The Margin, Chris Thompson. Chris is a longtime fan of Star Trek, having as a teenager watched Stewart in his original role as Jean Luc Picard in the iconic 90s television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Chris brings his unique perspective and insight to this latest episode of WTTPP, bridging the twenty year gap between the two Picard-centric series and helping to explore themes of family, tragedy and hurt, and the nature of reality present in the first season of Picard.
