“August for the people and their favourite islands”, said W.H. Auden in 1935, with the Isle of Wight in mind. Now people’s favourite islands are more likely to be Majorca or Mykonos, but the lure of the seaside remains. Alan Jenkins reads a selection of holiday poems from the past eighty years.
