The DFO Rundown

What’s next for the LA Kings? PLUS: A look at the top 50 free agents

Ep. 300

It’s a milestone episode of The DFO Rundown as Jason and Frank have reached episode 300 of the show. They kicked things off by talking a little bit about that before getting into the hockey talk.

They started out in Tampa Bay where the Bolts were bounced in five games by the Florida Panthers. The big story there surrounds the future of their Captain, Steven Stamkos. He’s right near the top of Frank’s ‘Top 50 Free Agents’ list but the guys seem to think he’s going to stay put.

That led to some talk about other big name free agents, like Golden Knights forward Jonathan Marchessault, who could be on his way out of Vegas. They also talked about some names lower down the list like Oilers defenseman Vinny Desharnais. That sparked a debate about what the definition of a true second-pairing defenseman is.

From there, they got into the playoff talked about broke down the series that Frank is covering between the Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators. They also hit on the Golden Knights and Stars and the Oilers taking down the Kings for a third straight season.

In this week’s edition of Buy or Sell, Tyler asked the guys a handful of questions relating to the coaching carousel in the NHL.

  • 303. Controversial Calls & The Oilers Goaltending Problem

    58:22
Boston Bruins fans were up in arms on Sunday night as a controversial goalie interference review didn’t go their way and allowed the Panthers’ eventual game-winning goal to stay on the board. Jason and Frank started the show with that and then eventually moved on to the rest of the series between Boston and Florida, including another controversial moment involving Sam Bennett. They also hit on the other Eastern Conference series between the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes are on the brink of elimination and the odds seem low that they’ll be able to pull of this comeback against the Rangers and that led to a conversation about what the franchise will do in the offseason. From there, they got to the Oilers and Canucks series. Goaltending has been a massive story in this series as Stuart Skinner was pulled in game three and the Oilers are down 2-1 despite controlling play for the majority of the series. Will the Oilers make a change in net ahead of game four? Or will they keep riding Skinner? They debated that and other potential lineup changes for the Oilers ahead of Game 4.They also talked about the Stars taking over their series against the Avalanche. What allowed this series to flip? Frank gave his take on that. They wrapped up the show with a new edition of Fill in the Blank and some talk about the coaching carousel that’s currently going on in the league.1:10 - Bennett goalie interference5:40 - Can the Bruins come back?7:20 - Canes vs Rangers20:30 - Canucks lead Oilers41:40 - Stars vs Avalanche44:00 - Fill in the Blank51:05 - Coaching searches54:10 - Leafs coaching updateWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The move was expected and now that it’s official, the Leafs turn their attention to their next hire. Frank and Jason started the podcast by talking about some potential fits and also debated where this Leafs job ranks amongst the other vacancies around the league. They then got into the Stanley Cup Playoffs as second-round action is underway and it has been spicy. We have superstars fighting in Florida, teams out west blowing big leads, and a battle of two giants in the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes. The Oilers held a three-goal lead in their series opener against the Canucks and ended up losing the game in regulation. Frank says it’s exactly the wake up call that the Oilers needed. • 301. Previewing a Potentially Electric Second Round

    51:24
The first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs has come to a close and as Frank said last week on the podcast, it was one of the least exciting first rounds we’ve seen in a while. There were only two series that went the distance and a handful ended in five games or earlier. While the first round wasn’t exactly eye-popping, it’s looking like the second round could be exactly that. Every matchup has some intriguing storylines behind it and there are some juggernaut matchups. Frank and Jason worked their way through the four series and talked about the key factors in each one.The Rangers are already up 1-0 on the Canes and that’s a series that could very easily go to seven games. The other Eastern series features a rested Panthers team going up against a Bruins team that just finished off the Leafs on Saturday night. Can the Bruins get revenge for last season? Before getting to the West, Tyler swung by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank, brought to you by Wendys. He asked the guys a couple of questions about round two and one about what the Leafs need to prioritize this summer. They then got into the two Western series. The Avs and Stars is going to be a grind and is another one that seems destined for seven. We also have an all-Canadian matchup between the Vancouver and Edmonton, which could lead to some serious fireworks both on the ice and online. They wrapped up the pdocast with some talk about what the Maple Leafs and Golden Knights will have to do this summer.4:40 - Rangers vs Canes preview12:30 - The Jack Adams18:00 - Panthers vs Bruins preview24:10 - Fill in the Blank30:50 - Stars vs Avalanche preview39:05 - Oilers vs Canucks46:00 - Changes in Toronto?50:05 - What’s next in Vegas?Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? 50:03
It took until the final day of the regular season, but the four Western Conference playoff series are finally locked in and with that, we are ready to go for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Jason and Frank broke down every series in today’s playoff preview podcast. To kick things off, they went through the surprising results from last night that saw the Vegas Golden Knights lose to the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Chicago Blackhawks, meaning the Golden Knights are now on a flight to Dallas and the Kings are going back to Edmonton for a third straight first-round matchup. They also broke down the upcoming heavyweight tilt between the Colorado Avalanche, who have stumbled their way into the playoffs, and the Winnipeg Jets, whose strong finish gave them home-ice advantage. The Canucks are also back in the playoffs for the first time since the bubble season and despite the fact that they held the top spot in the Pacific Division for the entire season, there are still people doubting them heading into their series against the Predators. Is that fair? Jason and Frank gave their thoughts. They wrapped up the podcast by giving their full Western Conference playoff brackets and then ended things by each tossing out who they think will be lifting Lord Stanley this June.0:45 - Nightly Recap 4:16 - Hart Trophy 13:17 Stars vs Golden Knights Preview18:26 Avalanche vs Jets Preview 29:25 Canucks vs Predators Preview   35:39 Oilers vs Kings Preview 41:59 Western Conference and Cup Final PredictionWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team?
