Boxing legend Deirdre Gogarty

Although boxing wasn’t legal in Ireland for women as recent as the late 80's, one remarkable woman from Mornington was determined to become a champion of the world. Today because of her impressive boxing career and unwavering desire to take her place in a world that didn’t accept women Deirdre Gogarty paved the way for many young boxers including Katie Taylor who names Deirdre as one of her heroes. Deirdre’s story is one of true grit and this month marks the anniversary of her first female boxing bout in Ireland where she won 6 rounds against Ann-Marie Griffin, Ciaran Mc Ivor who is co -founder of boxing bants Irelands boxing social media broadcaster joined Sinéad to discuss Deirdre's impressive career and to highlight his campaign to have a statute erected in the town in her honour.
