24: Masculinity

*** THIS IS THE LAST EPISODE OF SEASON TWO ***

This month, it's all about masculinity. What does it mean to be butch? How do men talk about emotions and mental health in a world that says "man up"? How are black men affected by stereotypes of masculinity?

"I refuse to accept that the way I look is about being masculine. It’s not. There are lots of different types of women in the world and I want to fight for that." Tabs

"We need to look deep within ourselves and identify the issues we’re facing and try and find ways out of it. It’s not women’s responsibility to do that, they’re trying navigate their own lives and their own personhoods." Derek

"There is this big disconnect between what it means to be a man and what it means to be an emotional man. And I just don't understand why because it's the same thing. Emotions don't discriminate." Rich

Listen to Tabs from Butch Please, Derek from the Mostly Lit podcast and Rich, a mental health campaigner.

  • It's worth noting that we recorded Tabs on the day of London Pride, only realising what had happened on the march long after we had left the studio. We just want to be crystal clear when we say that trans women are women and are, and have always been, welcome in women spaces. If your feminism doesn't include trans women, it's not feminism. Thank you. -
