Episode 32: Embracing Magic in the Other with Ezra Lipp

Taraleigh and Leah talk with drummer/songwriter Ezra Lipp about his philosophy to life that has given him the courage to constantly evolve and shine his talents in multiple ways, as a session musician around the Bay Area, frontman of his own band, stepping in as drummer for ALO, and recently writing and producing his first solo album. Ezra shares the inspiration behind creating his own band Magic In The Other and how he discovered that he’s a talented songwriter too. Which may have never happened if he didn’t have the courage to manifest what he really wanted and embrace the magic of the unknown. At the end, Ezra lays out a holistic model for looking at music that aligns with Leah’s research findings on how live music affects listeners. For the “Did you Know,” Leah shares this research and how it applies to a biopsychosocial model of health and healing. Taraleigh breaks it down in an easy action step that allows you to experience the fullness of music right now in the “Daily Jam.”

Ezra Lipp is a bay area-based drummer, singer, songwriter, band-leader, audio-engineer and intermittent podcast host of The Ezra Lipp Hour (More or Less). For years Ezra has been known and revered for his fearless improvisational chops and deeply musical drumming that can be heard playing with bands such as ALO, Phil Lesh & Friends, and many other rock/jam staples, as well as his ability to effortlessly support more traditional songwriters like Sean Hayes, Kacey Johansing and others as a live drummer or session musician. In more recent years he has emerged as a dynamic and charismatic frontman in his own right, engaging his natural abilities for humorous banter and antics while presenting his unique and articulate knack for heart-resonating songwriting and singing in bands like the short-lived (but power-packed) Magic In The Other which was the brain-child of Ezra’s from 2017-2020.

With the unexpected curveball of the pandemic in 2020 and the inevitable pause of live performances, Ezra turned his creative sensibilities towards the duel focus of leveling up his audio production skills (and now offers freelance mixing and mastering work under the pseudonym Middle Line Mastering), as well as honing his songwriting and producing efforts to create what will be his debut LP “The Softened Sky”, expected to be released in early 2022 along with a new band to explore and present his material in a live setting.
