Geektown Behind The Scenes Podcast 18: 'Outer Banks' Production Designer Daniel Novotny & Cinematographer Brad Smith

After a short break, we are back with a new episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast, and we return with two interviews on this show! The first is with cinematographer Brad Smith, and the second features production designer Daniel Novotny, both who were involved in creating the hit Netflix series 'Outer Banks'.

Cinematographer Brad Smith was responsible for the beautiful photography of the series. In the interview, we talk about how they used documentary film techniques to provide a sense of reality and to show the socioeconomic divide the two sides of the island. We also discuss the look of the series, and the incredible drone camera work which helped to immerse viewers in the island location.

Along with working on 'Outer Banks', Brad has served as director of photography on series such as 'Manifest', 'The Americans', 'Quantico' and 'Billions'.

The second interview features production designer Daniel Novotny. Daniel is something of a legacy production designer, as his father, Michael Novotny was also a hugely successful production designer. Prior to 'Outer Banks' Daniel was production designer on 'Gotham', 'Dominion', and the monolithic procedural drama 'CSI'.

For 'Outer Banks', Daniel talks about the challenges of making Charleston in South Carolina look like North Carolina, along with his favourite sets to create, and the rather surprising answer to which was the most challenging to work with!
