Is the mortgage market 'inching towards a perfect storm'?

The government has pledged to conduct a mortgage market review to help more first-time buyers get onto the housing ladder.

This will look into how more people can be given access to high loan-to-value mortgages and what alternative ways of providing finance and managing risk there might be.

On this week's edition of the FTAdviser Podcast, deputy editor Damian Fantato is joined by Martin Stewart, director of London Money, and David Hollingworth, associate director of L&C, to discuss what options the government might explore.

They discuss whether the loan-to-income ratio now poses a bigger problem for first-time buyers than raising a deposit, how to offer more access to mortgages without repeating the mistakes which led to the 2008 financial crisis, and whether the answer lies in new products rather than new rules. They also weight up the chances of the review happening at all and whether the solution is just to continue with Help to Buy.

The FTAdviser Podcast is the podcast for financial advisers, brought to you by FTAdviser. Each week, FTAdviser is joined by guests from the industry to discuss the week in news and pressing industry issues.
