John Cooper Clarke - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #240

Ep. 240

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 240 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! You asked for it… The universe provided… Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the Bard Of Salford, the living legend - that’s right, this week Pip is joined by JOHN COOPER CLARKE!

“If I was a band I would have split up years ago…”

Hopefully you are aware of the fellow and his work, but if that’s not the case, well you have a glorious road ahead of you… Pip sits down with the legendary punk poet to comb through all the good stuff - being the force of nature he is, most of the heavy lifting is done by John himself but as you’ll hear, this is not a problem in the slightest. Just tune in and take a ride with the story telling genius and indulge in those sweet Northern tones. From history to now, it all gets covered - his inspirational teacher who encouraged him in all kinds of ways, cultivating his own style from the cast in his life and picking up little elements from everyone he appreciated, the cerebral of poetry vs the immediate of rock and roll, his love and adoption of American style and trends, aiming to be an ‘artist as professional citizen’, having the door to success opened to him by none other than Bernard Manning of all people, NO FLARES, gigging with The Fall, Chickentown, Arctic Monkeys, Michael Madson, and as you can imagine - AN IMMENSE AMOUNT MORE! So, so great. You’ll like this one.

His book 'The Luckiest Guy Alive' is out and about so grab that!

    emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Riz Ahmed, originally episode 16 from 2015-01-28.This episode is now over ten years old, at time of the Friday Rewind edition. So - NEEDLESS TO SAY though I'll say it anyway - that's a whole ten years of life and career. Whether that time has slipped past with the click of fingers or you've felt every single moment of it, this is a wonderful chance to view that snapshot back then. Riz's career and life are immensely inspirational whether you are involved in acting or music, or indeed if you've listened to this episode before. There is so much in this episode that still resonates (and will continue to), and so much that you can still glean from the wisdom of Riz. It's also amazing how you can listen and kind of verify everything that he had in mind back then against what later came into being, including an incredible lineup of film roles and production credits.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureINSTAGRAMALL LINKS HEREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE
  • 606. Cody Frost: from bedroom to tattoo studio to stage, leaving no genre unchecked (Anatomy / Alligator / Process) #606

    01:08:37||Ep. 606
    Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by genre hopping but always heavy musician CODY FROST!Cody's journey takes root in the days of the Kerrang cover CD, which will have influenced many like minded folk into the heavier side of musical styles (they've come a long way since AD/DC on the cover!). This is the journey of Cody and a very real, human approach to acheiving goals and getting to an achievable level of success. Turns out it takes more than sending a message to the universe and simply receiving all you want without any work. Cody's been doing things their own way and making some awesome friends along the way including none other than Enter Shikari (to the point of guesting on their work), all the while being awesome at tattoo and digital art, and brushing up on music production. Super inspiring even if you're not in this area of the musical graph!• NOTE! Sound oddities from 11m38s to 17m31s - entirely unavoidable and efforts were made to salvage the audio - this was the most ear-friendly route, but apologies for that. Today, we catch up with Michael Fassbender, originally episode 172 from 2017-10-11.Below is the original writeup for this episode - enjoy a fascinating look back at really great one from a bunch of years ago... So much has happened since!PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureOriginal writeup:A blockbuster of an episode this week, as Pip sits down for a face to face chat with pure acting royalty Michael Fassbender! Far from the a short 3 minute press-junket soundbite interview, Pip has some quality real life facetime with Michael, who is (at the time of this podcast release) out there grinding on the promo for his new film 'The Snowman', directed by Tomas Alfredson and adapted from the novel by Jo Nesbø. A wonderful and warm chat, as we discover what Michael has been doing in the past year (racing Ferraris and surfing), but also get deep into the whole business - how he was born in Germany and was subsequently moved to Ireland at 2, his love of travel and how the acting profession broadens that experience hugely, how his career path could have branched off into an entirely alternate universe, and all manner of satisfying, filling movie gossip and insider knowledge. Safe to say then that this episode is pure Distraction Pieces goodness for your soul and being. Get involved, and if you feel it, get OTHERS involved too! Please enjoy.IMDBTHE AGENCY trailerKNEECAPTHE KILLERPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE
  • 605. Ayesha Hussain: Stuntwoman making actual history in front of us (Deadpool & Wolverine / Gladiator II / The Acolyte) #605

    01:25:51||Ep. 605
    Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the first South Aisan stuntwoman in Europe, AYESHA HUSSAIN!It doesn't hurt to start with a legit history making credential, but let's not limit Ayesha's work to simply that... This chat is one that locks in so much of what has been bubbling in previous more movie-centric episodes with a hugely refreshing positive outlook on the future of the big and small screen. Ayesha's story is all here for you to engage with, and hopefully will throw up some truly inspirational portals for those looking to join in the world of stuntwork and acting. You'll hear a super wide range of goodness in here including the lessons she learned from her mother and the forever legacy which lives on in her absence, where rage and joy meet, rebellion, the Babes With Blades collective, navigating immigrant mentality and working in concert with that, her own work attitude, journeying through burlesque and cowboy culture, and - as stated in the introduction - being the first South Asian stuntwoman. You know this is a big episode. Today, we catch up with Roots Manuva, originally episode 63 from 2015-10-14.Perhaps the greeting on this one should be "Well(come) Well(come) Well(come)"... Your chance to re-Witness the debut appearance of Roots Manuva on the podcast, whose appearance is hugely welcome and very nice to hear again after all these years. Whether you caught onto him in recent years through his work with folk like Four Tet, or you're a head since Witness bust the UK hip hop wide open, or perhaps like me (Buddy here ✌🏼) you caught his old skool work wit IQ Procedure on Max & Dave's rap show on Kiss FM! Those were the days. I let my tape rock til my tape pop, I tell you that much. Anyway - a champion on the scene, whether you focus on the UK side of Hip Hop or the greater culture itself. 01:15:22||Ep. 604
    Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by Scotland's comic champ CHRISTOPHER MACARTHUR-BOYD!You will surely know Christopher from the Here Comes The Guillotine podcast with comedy pals Frankie Boyle and Susie McCabe (and if not, you won't go wrong by jumping in), but if CMB isn't someone you're directly familiar with, I guess the question would be... When have Scroobius Pip and the Distraction Pieces Podcast steered you wrong? Thank you. This is a really great and uplifting chat with someone who's been working his way up through the comedy game, via all kinds of paths, while receiving and heeding advice from folks he truly respects. Such humility has only done him well in the quest, and you'll hear about it all including the Fringe route, process, podcasting, the origin story, the draw of London, and altogether so much more. • 603. TV Shows Of The Year 2024: featuring John & Joel of The Dream Factory #603

    01:09:02||Ep. 603
    Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!An episode celebrating the past year of television, from streamers to terrestrials - it's TV Of The Year 2024 with Joe & Joel!(Producer Buddy here - I've once again recklessly recycled a previous writeup for this one because my original is still entirely apt - dates have changed for obvious reasons but otherwise - enjoy the timewarp!)Another delightful end of year TV roundup from three people who truly know and care about their televisual diet. These are names you can trust, folks. You might know John and Joel from their own film podcast called Dream Factory (the world's greatest user-generated movie creation podcast), which Pip is a true fan of and contributor to, but if not, here is your chance to get to know them and become fast friends! This podcast goes appropriately deep into the television shows of the year in a hugely positive way, but of course you'll hear about some of the trials and tribulations of being such big devourers of content - the endless options of platforms, the accessibility of them all, and everything else... But really it's a perfect way to get up to speed on the things you might have missed, and also hear people chat about the shows that we all loved throughout the year. Who knows what 2025 has in store for us... But really - who cares? This is 2024 right here! Today, we catch up with filmmaker Coralie Fargeat (The Substance / Revenge) and actor Matilda Lutz (Revenge / Magpie), originally episode 205 from 2018-05-11.Below is the original writeup for context:–––––––––––––––––––––––––A great Friday spot for you this week, as Pip sits down with director Coralie Fargeat and actor Matilda Lutz, creator and star of the indie horror film ‘Revenge’. All kinds of aspects are covered including of course the main elements of the film itself, the process of working with a smaller budget and the knock-on effects that has (and the imagination it inspires), crossings of languages and how it can help with an international release, dealing with foreign distributors, the audition process, darker entertainment from directors such as David Cronenberg, the film set out in Morocco and working in the cold, working with that amount of blood in such a small space (I’m sure a lot of horror fans’ ears just pricked up!), trusting the audience with your world and the importance of the director and actor relationship. And a lot more. A packed episode then, you could say! ENJOY! And go see the film if you get an opportunity…PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureTHE SUBSTANCEREVENGECORALIE IGMATILDA IGPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE
