In deze aflevering van onze podcast praten Jarre en Lisa met Dani Morera Trettin, in het Engels. Dani is oprichter van The Hague Union of Students, een organisatie die opkomt voor studenten in Den Haag.

The Hague Union of Students (THUS) begon bij de Universiteit Leiden als een grassroots beweging om studenten meer invloed te geven in beslissingen in het onderwijs. Een eerste voorzichtig succes is al geboekt met een protest tegen een beslissing van de universiteit om geen geld meer te geven aan een groep die hulp biedt aan slachtoffers van seksueel geweld.

Voor veel studenten is de coronacrisis een moeilijke tijd, dat zien ze bij The Hague Union of Students ook. Er is soms sprake van eenzaamheid en stress. Dani vertelt hoe THUS hierbij probeert te helpen.

Dani vertelt ook over de obstakels die studenten—met name internationale studenten—in Den Haag tegenkomen, zoals het vinden van betaalbare woonruimte. Daar is er niet veel van en Dani zat zelf op een gegeven moment twee maanden zonder vast onderdak. Er komen steeds meer internationale studenten in Den Haag. GroenLinks vindt dat onderwijsinstellingen die internationale studenten aannemen moeten zorgen voor huisvesting voor deze studenten. En de gemeente moet hen ondersteunen waar nodig, bijvoorbeeld met goede voorlichting over hun rechten als huurders.

The Hague Union of Students (THUS) began at Leiden University as a grassroots movement to give students more influence in decisions in education. A first preliminary success has already been achieved with a protest against a decision by the university to stop giving money to a group that offers help to victims of sexual violence.

For many students the corona crisis is a difficult time, as they see at The Hague Union of Students. There is sometimes loneliness and stress. Dani tells us how THUS tries to help them.

Dani also talks about the obstacles that students-particularly international students-in The Hague face, such as finding affordable housing. The demand exceeds supply and Dani themselves were at one point unhoused for two months. There are more and more international students in The Hague. GroenLinks believes that educational institutions that take in international students should provide housing for these students. And the municipality should support them where necessary, for example with good information about their rights as tenants.
